A purple pumpkin and a little masked ghost make an unusual Halloween pairing. The pumpkin has a light-colored embroidered spiderweb, while the ghost wears a purple witch hat with a contrasting black band.
The two pieces hang at different heights from a black-and-purple cord. This gives each character room to show without crowding the other, and makes the decoration easy to adapt for a wall hook, seasonal display, or gift.
The pumpkin begins as a ribbed rectangle that is joined and gathered into shape. The ghost combines a black crochet body, a pale face panel, small arms, and a pointed hat.

Materials

Part 1: Ribbed Pumpkin
Use purple yarn.
Row 1: Ch 15. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 14 hdc.
Rows 2–14: Ch 1 and turn. Work 14 hdc in BLO across.
After Row 14, fasten off with a long sewing tail.
Join and Gather
Bring the first and last rows together and sew them to form a tube.
Gather one open end, then add filling in small portions. Gather the opposite end without packing the pumpkin so tightly that the ribbing stretches flat.
Pass a long strand through the center and draw it gently to bring the top and bottom inward. Adjust the filling and shape before securing the strand.
The gathered shape should remain soft enough to arrange with your fingers. Pulling harder is not always the answer if one side looks uneven; check the seam and filling distribution first.
Part 2: Green Stem
Use light-green yarn.
Round Instructions Stitches
1 5 sc into a MR; join 5
2–4 sc in every st for 3 rounds 5
5 inc in every st 10
Fasten off with a sewing tail and attach the stem at the pumpkin’s upper center.
Keep the connection secure, but do not rely on the stem alone to support the pumpkin’s weight when attaching it to the cord.
Part 3: Spiderweb Embroidery
Choose a center point on one side of the pumpkin.
Use fine light-colored yarn to make approximately five lines radiating outward. Connect them with two or three rings of shorter stitches, following the demonstration.
Keep the thread tension gentle enough that it lies against the surface without flattening the ribbed shape.
Inspect the web from a little distance before securing the ends. Its overall outline matters more than making every connecting section identical.
Part 4: Ghost Body
Use black yarn.

2 inc in every st 12
3 [sc, inc] × 6 18

5–8 sc in every st for 4 rounds 24
During the following round, form one arm on each side:
Ch 5, then sl st back along the chain.
Continue around the body between the arms, using the video for their exact placement and the return stitches along each chain.
Wavy Lower Edge
Follow the demonstrated placement for the sequence:
sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st
Repeat around to create the changing stitch heights at the lower edge.
Fasten off and secure the end. Arrange the waves gently rather than stretching them into identical shapes.
Part 5: Pale Face Panel
Use white or cream yarn.
Round Instructions Stitches
1 6 sc into a MR 6
2 inc in every st 12
3 [sc, inc] × 6 18
Fasten off with a long sewing tail.
Position the panel on the front of the ghost and attach it evenly. Gently arrange it into a slightly oval shape without pulling the surrounding black fabric inward.
Embroider the black eyes and mouth, then add red or pink markings. Test their positions before securing the final ends.
Part 6: Purple Witch Hat
The pictured hat uses purple yarn with a black band.
Follow the video for the complete increase sequence. Work from the narrow tip toward the wider cone, then form the flared brim.
Test the hat above the face before attaching it. The brim should remain visible without hiding the eyes or pressing the face panel downward.
Add the contrasting band as demonstrated and arrange the tip gently. Secure the hat using a method suited to the finished pieces.
Part 7: Two-Color Hanging Cord
Make one strand in black and one in purple.
For each strand:
Ch 90, then sl st back along the chain as demonstrated.
Finish the ends securely. Place the strands together and twist them gently into a coordinated cord.
Test the length at the intended display location before attaching the characters. Adjust the chains if needed, keeping the two strands comparable in length.
Arrange and Attach the Pieces
Lay out the cord, pumpkin, and ghost before sewing.
Position the pumpkin higher and the ghost lower, leaving enough space that the pumpkin does not cover the witch hat. Check the arrangement while hanging, since the pieces may turn differently from how they lie on a table.
Anchor each connection through secure body stitches. Avoid using only a decorative leaf, arm tip, or hat edge as the attachment.
Inspect every connection and weave in the remaining yarn ends. If the pieces face away from the viewer, adjust the attachment positions before adding more knots.
For vehicle display, keep the decoration clear of the driver’s view, mirrors, and controls. A wall hook is another simple way to enjoy the same arrangement.

Troubleshooting the Arrangement
The pumpkin looks lumpy: Check the filling and joined seam before tightening the center strand further.
The web dents the pumpkin: Relax the embroidery tension and inspect the ribbing underneath.
The hat hides the face: Reposition it while the attachment is still temporary.
The pieces overlap while hanging: Adjust their heights and attachment points rather than lengthening the whole cord.
The cord twists the characters backward: Test each connection separately and check whether the cord ends were secured under uneven tension.
Change the Palette
Purple, black, and pale green create the pictured look. Orange with black gives a more traditional Halloween palette, while rust and olive offer a softer autumn version.
Repeat one color in the pumpkin and hat to connect the design visually. Keep the face panel light enough that the embroidered expression remains clear.
Care and Storage
Follow the care instructions for the yarn, filling, and any adhesive used. Let the pieces dry completely after cleaning.
Store the decoration without crushing the hat brim or tangling the cord around the arms. Check the hanging connections before displaying it again.
